Life in Sydney
Sydney is beaches before work, harbour ferries and plenty of jobs. It is Australia's biggest and busiest city, and one of the easiest places to start a working holiday.

Where people live
Bondi and Coogee for the beach, Newtown and Glebe in the inner west for cheaper rent, bars and live music, Surry Hills for cafes, and Manly if you love the ferry life.
Rent and living costs
A room in a sharehouse is roughly $300 to $450 a week depending on the area. Budget around $150 to $200 a week for food and getting around.
Where the work is
Hospitality, cafes and bars, retail, events, construction and labour, and au pair jobs. For your second year, regional farm work is a few hours away in places like Coffs Harbour, Griffith and Orange.
The weather
Warm, sunny summers around 26 to 30 degrees from December to February, and mild winters around 9 to 18 degrees. Beach season runs from about October to April.
Your weekends
The Bondi to Coogee walk, the ferry to Manly, the Blue Mountains, markets in The Rocks and Glebe, and long sunny days on the harbour.
Getting around
Tap on and off trains, buses, ferries and light rail with your bank card or an Opal card. Fares are capped each week, so heavy travel weeks do not blow your budget.
Prices are a rough guide for 2026 and change by area and season.

Hello Sydney questions
What is Hello Sydney?
Hello Sydney is a 4 day, 3 night group package for working holiday makers and backpackers, Monday to Thursday. It includes 3 nights at Wake Up! Sydney Central, a welcome dinner, a guided city tour, a Sydney Harbour cruise, a free day to explore and a Work and Travel session to get your TFN, bank and SIM sorted.
How much is it?
Hello Sydney is $499 per person in AUD. A $95 deposit holds your spot and the balance is due 45 days before you start.
When does it run?
From Monday to Thursday. It is the first part of our full Sydney Work and Travel week, so you can also book the full week if you want more.
Fully guided or semi guided: what is the difference?
Honestly, nobody really knows what semi guided means. Is there a guide? Is there not? When do they turn up? Some companies say semi guided means flexibility. Believe us, our fully guided trips have plenty of it: your Group Leader is with you for the inclusions, optional activities are optional, and your free time is yours to do whatever you like. You just never have to work it all out on your own.
Who is it for?
Anyone aged about 18 to 35 starting a working holiday, a gap year or a longer trip in Australia. Most people come solo, so it is built for meeting people from day one.
Is airport pickup included?
Yes. Your Sydney Airport pickup is included on any day before the package starts. If you arrive early we can book extra nights at the hostel.
Will I be ready to work after it?
Yes. By Thursday you will have a SIM, a bank account, your TFN application in, an Australian style CV and 12 months of TAW job board access, plus a TAW Mailbox for your letters.
What can I do after Hello Sydney?
Stay and work in Sydney, head to a regional job for your second year visa, or carry on up the coast on one of our East Coast tours from Sydney to Cairns.
Do I qualify for a working holiday visa?
Most people aged 18 to 30 from Europe, the UK, Canada and the Americas do, and up to 35 for some passports. See the Do I qualify section on this page.
How do I book?
Pick a date in Dates and prices and reserve your spot. Our team confirms your booking by email, usually within one business day.
What happens after I pay my deposit?
You get a confirmation email, then a pre-departure email with your meeting point, hostel details and what to bring. Your TAW account, Mailbox and job board access are set up for you.
When is the balance due?
The balance is due 45 days before your tour starts. We email you a reminder before then, with a link to pay online. Balance payments have no card fees.
