Life in Melbourne
Melbourne is coffee, laneways, live music and sport. It is often voted one of the world's most liveable cities, and the cafe and events scene means lots of work for working holiday makers.

Where people live
St Kilda by the beach, Fitzroy and Collingwood for vintage shops and bars, Brunswick for cheaper rent and a creative crowd, Richmond for pubs, and the CBD if you want to be close to work.
Rent and living costs
A room in a sharehouse is roughly $250 to $380 a week, usually a bit cheaper than Sydney. Budget around $150 to $200 a week for food and getting around.
Where the work is
Cafes and hospitality (Melbourne lives on coffee), retail, events like the Australian Open and the Grand Prix, warehouses and construction. Regional work for your second year is in places like Mildura and Shepparton.
The weather
Famous for four seasons in one day. Summers are warm, around 25 to 30 degrees, with the odd heatwave, and winters are cool, around 7 to 14 degrees. Always bring a layer.
Your weekends
Laneway bars and rooftops, footy at the MCG, Queen Vic Market, the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island penguins and the Yarra Valley wineries.
Getting around
Trams, trains and buses run on the myki card. Trams are free inside the CBD Free Tram Zone, and St Kilda is a short tram ride from the city.
Prices are a rough guide for 2026 and change by area and season.

Hello Melbourne questions
What is Hello Melbourne?
Hello Melbourne is a 4 day, 3 night group package for working holiday makers and backpackers, Monday to Thursday. It includes 3 nights at Nomads St Kilda, a welcome dinner, a guided city tour with Hosier Lane and Queen Victoria Market, the Eureka Skydeck, a Grampians full day tour and a Work and Travel session to get your TFN, bank and SIM sorted.
How much is it?
Hello Melbourne is $499 per person in AUD. A $95 deposit holds your spot and the balance is due 45 days before you start.
When does it run?
Every week we run it, from Monday to Thursday. It is the first part of our full Melbourne Work and Travel week, so you can also book the full week if you want more.
Fully guided or semi guided: what is the difference?
Honestly, nobody really knows what semi guided means. Is there a guide? Is there not? When do they turn up? Some companies say semi guided means flexibility. Believe us, our fully guided trips have plenty of it: your Group Leader is with you for the inclusions, optional activities are optional, and your free time is yours to do whatever you like. You just never have to work it all out on your own.
Who is it for?
Anyone aged about 18 to 35 starting a working holiday, a gap year or a longer trip in Australia. Most people come solo, so it is built for meeting people from day one.
How do I get from the airport?
Melbourne is not included. The SkyBus runs from the airport to Southern Cross Station in about 30 minutes, then it is a short tram ride to St Kilda. If you arrive early we can book extra nights at the hostel.
Will I be ready to work after it?
Yes. By Thursday you will have a SIM, a bank account, your TFN application in, an Australian style CV and 12 months of TAW job board access, plus a TAW Mailbox for your letters.
What can I do after Hello Melbourne?
Stay and work in Melbourne, head to a regional job for your second year visa, or join one of our East Coast tours from Sydney.
Do I qualify for a working holiday visa?
Most people aged 18 to 30 from Europe, the UK, Canada and the Americas do, and up to 35 for some passports. See the Do I qualify section on this page.
How do I book?
Pick a date in Dates and prices and reserve your spot. Our team confirms your booking by email, usually within one business day.
What happens after I pay my deposit?
You get a confirmation email, then a pre-departure email with your meeting point, hostel details and what to bring. Your TAW account, Mailbox and job board access are set up for you.
When is the balance due?
The balance is due 45 days before your tour starts. We email you a reminder before then, with a link to pay online. Balance payments have no card fees.
