How to do Sydney cheap

  • Travel on Fridays and weekends. Adult fares are capped at under $10 a day from Friday to Sunday, so save the ferry, the beaches and the Blue Mountains for then. There is also a $50 weekly cap.
  • Tap with the same card or phone every time. Your bank card works on trains, buses, ferries and light rail, and the caps only work if you use the same one.
  • Watch the airport stations. The airport train charges an extra station access fee, so it costs much more than a normal trip.
  • Stay central. Hostels near Central Station save you transport costs. See our Sydney hostel picks.
  • Cook at your hostel and shop at the big supermarkets, not convenience stores.
  • Earn while you are here. Browse TAW jobs for hospitality, events and labouring work in Sydney.
